| "What we put in our heart is what we remember in those tough times." |
I’LL SAY John 3:16 before I’ll say the wrong thing. John 3:16 is better words from my heart than saying how I feel, what things look like, or voicing my opinion. None of those help me when I’m under pressure. The Word of God does. And sometimes, I just can’t think of the verse I need right then, so I quote what I do remember.
All Scripture is inspired by God. There’s a verse for everything. What we put in our heart is what we remember in those tough times. It’s good to know what God says about your situation. He promises us peace, safety, health, healing, wisdom, understanding – all of His goodness. He says we have enough love for difficult people, enough joy to overcome sorrow, and self-control to not fall apart. Or blow up.
But when one minute, all’s well and thirty seconds later, your head is throbbing – John 3:16 works. Or John 1:1. Or the 23rd Psalm. Did you know it says we go THROUGH the valley? In one side and out the other.
The valley of the shadow of death was a real place outside Jerusalem where Israel had sacrificed their children to Molech, a false god, small g. David had fled through it to escape King Saul more than once. But he knew God was for him, God was with him to carry him through. They had no written words to carry around with them and so learned to sing psalms. Israel today still has a heart for dancing and singing.
I’ve done this, too. Made something up to worship God, to put my heart and head in the right place. Point is, you be you. And refuse fear. Don’t panic, we read in Proverbs 3:25. “For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken (Verse 26).” Look toward heaven and swallow that wrong reaction. Make a habit of speaking God’s promises instead. It will become the biggest benefit (Psalm 103:2).
“Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.” (Proverbs 21:23)
“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:10)
