"We are, in our humanity, incredibly weak. It is God who enables us to do His will." |
GOD’S WILL BE DONE is not an incorrect prayer, though some have said so. Instead, for some, it is their level of faith. We preach becoming “faith masters,” men and women with bulk. But the truth is, we are all at different levels of knowledge and trust in Him, and only He knows the heart in each one of us. No one reaches the ultimate height of faith IN ORDER TO be healed. Instead, it is that we trust Him where we are at, and He meets us there. We’re not fighting to stay afloat under our own strength and wisdom but relying totally on Him.
Being honest, I’ve seen more faith in simple things from people with less knowledge of it than in congregations taught faith day-in and day-out. I’ve seen more kindness and understanding where men and women are in places of difficulty than in those ordained to speak and to shepherd. The highest among us is, in Jesus’ words, a servant of all (Mark 10:44). Authority in the body of Christ is simply a better place to kneel. It is a higher reliance. For the one called and anointed to it has been given the hearts and lives, the emotions of, people. This is a serious responsibility which should be taken in fully.
“Be shepherds over the flock God has entrusted to you. Watch over it as God does: Don’t do this because you have to, but because you want to. Don’t do it out of greed, but out of a desire to serve. Don’t be rulers over the people entrusted to you, but be examples for the flock to follow.” (1 Peter 5:2-3 GW)
We are, in our humanity, incredibly weak. It is God who enables us to do His will. First, He shares the truth of it with us, giving revelation, then He pours His Spirit out upon us, within us, giving us the ability to accomplish it. But no man is at his fullest strength in that moment. We don’t start at one hundred percent. We stretch forward for it, knowing He gives us the strength (Philippians 3:13-14). And sometimes, that place we are at is “God’s will be done.” Not an incorrect prayer, for we are wishing for what His Word promises He will do. Our heart is knitted with His heart. Our trust is in Him to accomplish it. But it grows taller and sends roots deeper as we understand who He is and thus, who we are in Him. He is our identity.
He has made us like Him. 2 Peter 1:3 says we have been given “all things that pertain unto life and godliness.” Godliness is the nature and character of God. Romans 12:1 says we are “a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God.” Holiness is His integrity, His justice. He is merciful. Romans 8:10 promises the "Spirit is life [in us] because of righteousness.” Righteousness is a sacred place where we stand, fully in His Presence. Not of our own will or might, but because of His great love for us. He wants us to be there. He has made us godly. He has made us holy. He has made us righteous. Because He loves us, we look and sound and react like Him, our words filled with His honor. That is who we are and where we are now. We are united with Him.
That said, sometimes in the process of growing, our knowledge falls short of the truth, but even then, what we pray, He hears us and answers. Often, His answer includes a time to grow. This has been Him throughout eternity. Abraham had to grow. David had to grow. The prophet Elijah called down fire from heaven then ran from Queen Jezebel in terror (1 Kings 18:38; 1 Kings 19:3). God found him hiding in a cave. What are you doing here, Elijah? (1 Kings 19:9) Growth was needed.
We are all at different stages of growth. He sets the tempo. We trust Him to hear us at every step along the way.
“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” (2 Peter 1:3-4 KJV)
