"He should be how we make our choices." |
MEN SEEK a supernatural answer with natural solutions. Fear, anxiety, sorrow, and depression can be “handled” through doctors and counseling, but they are only banished through Jesus. Sickness, disease, and other forms of illness can be suppressed through medication, but the body only heals as God created it to do; and when a doctor’s solution does not work, there is no Healer but Jesus.
“And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians. And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.” (2 Chronicles 16:12-13)
King Asa looked to the physicians and did not seek the Lord for His healing, and He died. Here was a man whose reign had been godly at first. He knew the worship of His fathers and was familiar with what Old Covenant Law said God would do to heal man. In Exodus 23:25, it states, “And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.” These words were spoken to Israel when they planned to enter the land of Canaan. The laws given in Leviticus detail the sacrifice required for the healing of the leper. Jesus mentioned these to a man healed of leprosy in the gospels. We see a different ending for King Hezekiah in 2 Kings 20. He was told by the prophet to prepare for the end of his life. Yet when he turned his face toward the wall and pleaded with the Lord, he was given 15 more years. We see many more healings as we read through the lives of those in the Old Testament.
“In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD.” (2 Kings 20:1-2)
But to leave God out of our medical decisions is a mistake. God works through doctors. My mother tells the story of a man who chose one doctor over another based on personality. The attitude of the first physician did not sit right with him. Yet when he looked at the second physician for surgery, the Spirit spoke. The first doctor would do the surgery well. Why are we so ready to take such important decisions into our own hands? The Spirit breathed life into Adam. He formed all the organs and tissues, the heart and nervous system. He knows us inside and out. He should be how we make our choices.
But that requires relationship. We must spend time with Him, learn His ways, and follow after His footsteps, else we cannot hear Him and won’t know His voice from the devil’s. The Word tells us the devil dresses like an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). In other words, he imitates God, and men without knowledge, who don’t know the words of God, and the voice of God (how He speaks) then fall for the devil’s lies. Our reasoning also enters into our choices in this area, and the state of our health, the seriousness of it.
Our God who does the impossible will do all we need in the right place at the right time and bring complete healing. We must place this truth in our hearts and hold fast to it without wavering. Because again, when we know Him, we will not turn loose or be deceived.
Pride also enters into the process. For one reason or another – embarrassment at our condition, our lack of money, or what we perceive as the right avenue of healing – we shelter our emotions beneath pride over our personal appearance or the opinions of others. Pride is what rises before we fall down, the Scriptures say. King Asa’s pride kept him from seeking the Lord. King Hezekiah was willing to humble himself. Knowing we have heaven as home following death should not be a reason to give up, but it is a comfort and what removes our fear of death. This was Jesus’ heart, the Father’s heart, and the Spirit’s heart. Though we don’t deserve it in the natural, we have it through Jesus’ blood. God has promised us long life, and a healthy long life, at that. Even in the midst of our struggles, which bring pain and suffering, we have to stand fast in God’s Word and know He is the good guy.
He is our rescue, our protection. He is our wisdom to know what to do. He guides the thoughts of the doctors to choose the right course of action. He moves in our bodies to sustain and to heal. He aids our finances so that we need not fear debt. Jesus must always be our Healer, the Spirit our Strength to endure and to choose wisely, the Father mercy and goodness which never turns away. All of heaven is ours through their gentle kindness.
We must know and believe.
“This I declare of the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God and I am trusting him.” (Psalm 91:2 NLT)
“He remembered our utter weakness. His faithful love endures forever.” (Psalm 136:23 NLT)
