I Want Jesus

"I want Jesus."

I DON’T WANT a picture on the wall. I don’t want words on the page. I don’t want stories from the past, even those passed down through the ages. I don’t want what was, although I value it. I don’t want what I have heard that I have believed that is true. I don’t want rules and instructions and corrections. I want Jesus.

He isn’t dead, hasn’t passed on, is not a memory, is not a framed image. He isn’t “was” but He is “is.” I want Him, flesh and bone, the One men’s hands have touched, the Maker they have handled, the very living breathing Word of Life. I want to stand in amazement and see His face and touch His palms and fall at His feet.

I have what He’s done for me—salvation in its fullness. I have His healing, His peace of mind, His wisdom and grace. I have His Spirit within me, the Spirit of Christ also upon me. I have His blood washed over me, and I am cleansed from all sin and death.

I wear the crown He’s given me, although I don’t hold it in my hands. On my feet, I have the shoes He’s shod, with His strength to uphold me, and His promise of forever and everlasting. But what I want the most, what I need the greatest, is to see Him there before me and it be the King, the Lion of Judah, the Son of God, the Ruler of Israel. The man from Nazareth.

Not a ruse. Not a painting done by a master from times before. Not poetry alone, although I’ve written it. And I do this with these words, here today. I don’t want sermons crafted by wordsmiths, nor songs sung with talent far beyond mine. No, I want to see Jesus and know He's “this” tall. To stand in His presence and let it clothe mine. I want to know the infinitesimal about Him, to look into His eyes.

And forget everything here on earth, just let it all go dim, while caught up in His glory, and filled with His laughter. I want to see Jesus and it never end.

LISTEN to Jason Upton, “Into The Sky.”

LISTEN to Aaron Brown, “Itsy Bitsy (On Your Shoulders).”

"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us; ) That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.” (1 John 1:1-4)
