God at Work

"We should support men of God who speak for God and pray over their lives and their words."

WE ARE too quick to speak where prophecy is concerned. When Jesus walked on the earth, He fulfilled thousands of years of prophecy which had been spoken by many different prophets, yet those hearing Him and seeing Him denied He was the Christ. The prophecies said He would be born in Bethlehem of a virgin, would enter Jerusalem riding on a donkey, would be disfigured with our sins and our chastisement to the point of looking inhuman. The High Priest Caiaphas who despised Jesus, said of Him, “One man must die for the people,” and in so doing, prophesied Jesus’ death, a death he personally would see to it came to pass, without any idea that was truly the Son of God (John 11:50-51).

Things haven’t changed. Just as Jesus said to the Pharisees and scribes, they were responsible for the deaths of the prophets they claim to have honored (Matthew 23:31), people today, both in and out of the church, are happier to judge and cast prophets under the bus than to seek God for the truth of what has been spoken. As with other parts of God’s Word, we see the wrong perspective. We should seek God’s point-of-view and not be so easily led toward criticism and offense.

Rather than say what has been spoken that was fulfilled we are looking for every jot and tittle. Minister Steve Furtick had this lesson taught him by the Spirit of God when scrolling comments on one of his own sermons. He found one that was particularly offensive and latched hold of it only to have God ask him why he’d passed up all the kindly spoken words. Many had been blessed. One had been offended, and he saw the one and not the many.

Persecution will come because those who disagree with what God is doing cannot see it as God at work. Our best words to them are often to say nothing at all and to pray for them to have wisdom and revelation as the apostle Paul prayed over the Ephesian church. We should seek God and not prophecy. We should support men of God who speak for God and pray over their lives and their words. When we know God’s voice, we will not be confused and will not judge men using carnal, worldly knowledge. Whether it looks like the prophet is misspeaking or telling the truth, we seek God first.

No one man contains all of truth except for Jesus Christ, and in Him alone is wisdom. He should be in our ears then what else we hear will be clear. Faith over the future is our only response. We must not worry about tomorrow but cast all our cares upon our loving God and keep walking forward, joy in our hearts, the strength of God within us, and the Word of God on our lips.

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” (Matthew 5:17)

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” (Matthew 23:37)
