The Lord's Prayer - an Overview

The Lord's Prayer sits in the center of three chapters, Matthew 5-7. The verses before it describe how to pray it, your behavior and specifically say to be like your Father in heaven. The passages after it are behaviors that come from the prayer itself. These are how to behave to reflect it.

The words of the prayer itself are all Jesus:
  • OUR FATHER WHICH ART IN HEAVEN, Jesus spoke the words of the Father and did the Father's work.
  • HALLOWED BE THY NAME, Jesus is the name of the Father and the word "hallowed" implies consecration to the task He came to earth to do.
  • THY KINGDOM COME, Jesus brought the kingdom of God to earth
  • THY WILL BE DONE, Jesus came to do the Father's will
  • IN EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN, Jesus is God who came to earth to bring the goodness of God in heaven to earth.
  • GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD, Jesus is the bread of life.
  • AND FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS, Jesus brought forgiveness to earth. We forgive as He forgave.
  • AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL, Jesus defeated the devil for good.
  • FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY, FOR EVER, Jesus is given all glory in heaven and earth as prophesied.
