Just Because He Can

"God often does things for us just because. He loves us like that."

WE HAVE THIS IDEA that God only steps in when we ask from exactly the right spot, in the right manner, quoting the right words. Getting Him to answer our prayer has become about like playing Jenga, only we’re dressed up. We preach faith and strain to walk by faith, to look like people of faith, the whole while doubting anything in our lives will change.

The truth is God moves on our behalf all the time without us asking anything or us making any motion toward faith. Over and over in the Word of God is He seen as merciful. Abraham, the father of our faith, was simply living in Ur when God spoke and said to go from there. God appeared to Him in a vision, without any prayer of Abraham’s being spoken, and promised him Isaac, though it would take him until age 100 for his son to be born. Yes, Abraham had faith to have his son at his advanced age, Hebrews tells us this, but it wasn’t a conversation he initiated. God did.

God called more than one prophet when they were not expecting it. Elisha was plowing the field when Elijah happened by. Ezekiel was relaxing by the river when the heavens opened, and he saw visions of God. There are many other like stories in the Bible. David was tending sheep, so overlooked by his family that the prophet Samuel had to ask if there was a son missing from the family. In the gospels, there are Jesus’ disciples, several who were fishermen worried about their daily catch when Jesus spoke to them.

God is, in fact, looking out for each one of us. He is concerned about the lives of each of His children, and though we are to go before the Lord in prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, though the just shall live by faith, God often does things for us just because. He loves us like that. He sent Jesus just because. We didn’t deserve His sacrifice nor so great a salvation, but God wanted to bless us abundantly. He sent His Holy Spirit as the seal of His promise that we will receive our full inheritance, including the redemption of our bodies.

God’s love is constantly searching for someone to rescue, someone to fill with His life, someone to pour His wisdom into. He heals because He’s provided it. He surprises someone with enough blessing to get them out of their financial bind. A couple years ago, I had a large credit card debt and I set myself to pay it off. I had no idea how that would happen, but no sooner had I made the choice than God dropped the how-to right in my lap. Within three months, I didn’t owe anything.

Our heart for Him, our love for them, beckons our heavenly Father, our beautiful Savior, and the sweet Holy Spirit to act. Our integrity, that we do all we know to do as He’s instructed, that we study the Word in order to grow, and we do our best to be led by Him, is a position of childlike trust that He adores. There are things we need that we must be patient to receive, but there are things He does without any prompting from us.

And that is the most amazing part of our relationship. Because salvation is meant to be a relationship, not simply us bowing in reverence to God, although that is important, but us leaning on Him, knowing He gave all to open the way for Him to do for us everything His heart desires. And now, us expecting it. Just as I know my parents’ love for me and all they would do for me, just as my daughter can expect me to do everything I can for her, I know my Father in heaven has my daily life in mind. He has a plan for all that concerns me and a few surprises along the way.

That makes getting up in the morning the best thing. Because I never know what exceeding abundance He will pour out. What gift of laughter He will give. What word of revelation I will receive. Simply because that’s who He is to me, the most wonderful Abba, and who I am to Him, His beloved daughter, Suzanne.

“And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the Lord upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised the Lord, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.” (2 Chronicles 7:3)

“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” (Hebrews 11:8)
