Play Ball!

"We have become a part of the most powerful family in existence."

MANY MEN WISH TO JOIN THE TEAM, to wear the jersey, to be in the team picture, without ever kicking the ball. They will show up to the game from time to time, make sure they are seen, but continue as if they never joined at all. My husband and daughter have seen employees like this, people who get hired where they work but who don’t do the work or do it lackadaisically or even some who don’t show up on day one. Just being hired proves something to them, I guess, so they stay home. Instead, we are to be like children who try out, hungering to play, knowing they can do this and do it well, eager to learn to do it well, then when they make the team, they run home to mom and dad or grandma and grandpa, leaping for joy. This should be our attitude. We have become a part of the most powerful family in existence, and have a Father who will supply every need, heal every hurt, and bring us joy which will stretch into eternity. Why not show up in our jersey with the intent to be like Him, to play the game of life with all that is within us, and where we know we fall short, to lean on Him and learn how to play better? Accept the foul, sit in timeout, then go back in and do better next time. The victory is already ours.

“Obey God because you are his children; don’t slip back into your old ways—doing evil because you knew no better. But be holy now in everything you do, just as the Lord is holy, who invited you to be his child. He himself has said, ‘You must be holy, for I am holy.’” (1 Peter 1:14-16 TLB)

“But you are not like that, for you have been chosen by God himself—you are priests of the King, you are holy and pure, you are God’s very own—all this so that you may show to others how God called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2:9 TLB)
